Project: Special Needs Edible Landscape & Therapy Garden
Client Profile: TERI is a non-profit that provides programs for children and adults with special needs located in north county San Diego.
Vision: To replace a large water thirsty lawn and ornamental landscape with a low water and edible landscape that would feed and creatively nurture the resident population.
Site Considerations: 1-acre lot must be entirely ADA (wheelchair) compliant, front yard slopes, back yard poor drainage, emphasis on function, interaction, privacy and safety, focus on maximizing crop production, large eucalyptus trees, and gophers
Solutions: 10,000 square ft. urban farm space, wheelchair accessible garden table and wooden raised beds, 100+ fruit tree orchard integrated with low-water California natives, ADA compliant meandering pathways and footbridge, outdoor music area and sensory herb garden.
Eco-Features: Repurposed pathway pavers from existing retaining wall, constructed “bamboo” trellises from demo irrigation pipe, routed roof gutters to irrigate orchard, drip irrigation system with weather controller, sustainably sourced lumber, permeable pathway materials providing drainage and reducing runoff, landscape provides habitat for butterflies and pollinators.
Moving Forward: Trained in-house staff on farming methodology to provide on-going organic care, conducted production and cost forecasting, provide contracting and consulting services as needed, conduct tours and solicit press.

Project: Children’s Garden and Outdoor Classroom
Client Profile: Montessori elementary school with children ranging from 18 months to 12 years in age.
Vision: To create a permanent garden and outdoor exploration space that would be accessible and safe for children of all ages.
Site Considerations: Undefined backyard space, limited irrigation access, emergency exit required, poor drainage, rabbits, and curious children!
Solutions: A child-scaled garden exploration space, magical entry arbor and gate, 18-inch planter beds, cascading strawberries on retaining wall, rabbit proof fencing around the circumference, sensory herb and cut flower beds, native plant demonstration garden, espalier apple trellis, and citrus orchard.
Eco-Features: Automated drip irrigation system, sustainably sourced rough-cut lumber, owl box to attract a predator for rabbits, reclaimed PVC pipe for “bamboo” trellis, heavy woodchip mulches for weed prevention.
Moving Forward: Provide regular organic maintenance of site resulting in a school garden that thrives unattended by school staff through summers. Conduct ongoing training of educations and assist in development of curriculum resources.

Project: Rental Property Organic Landscape Maintenance Program
Client Profile: Bowden Properties owns and manages over 150 residential units throughout San Diego.
Vision: To service the organic landscaping needs of a property owner/manager as well as provide an edible garden maintenance and harvest program.
Site Considerations: Some edible gardening spaces, several lawns, and mostly ornamental landscapes. Front yards, back yards, and patios of both homes and building complexes. Differing tenant needs.
Solutions: Provide organic lawn care and organic ornamental landscape services that achieve greater sustainability. Progressively convert underutilized lawn spaces into edible gardens that offer tenants fresh fruits and vegetables.
Eco-Features: Provide a weekly compost collection service for tenant kitchen waste. Implement a crop swap program that meets the needs of the tenants.
